Story about Louis  White, 1923-2011, as told by his daughter-in-law, Carol White, of Clay, NY.

It was  in the late fall   of 2009 that I heard through my choir at church, about a trip being offered to choirs throughout the United States to travel to Germany and France in late June through the 4th of July of 2011. This wasn’t one of your usual tours it was a mission trip to honor our military. It was called “An American Salute! So, being the “American History buff that I am, I was immediately interested.
We would start our trip singing at Ramstein Air Force Base,  Germany, with a concert for our troops, then would perform in a cathedral in Heidelberg. From there, on to France singing at the American Military Cemetery in Lorranine France. We would tour Paris and then culminating with our last concert on the 4th of July 2011 at the military cemetery on the Beaches of Normandy.
Well, when I heard Normandy, I immediately thought of my father-in-law ……I knew he was there in the invasion had stormed the beaches that day, but he never would talk about the war. It was something he had buried a long time ago in his past……until I happened to mention to him that I was thinking of going on this trip. Well, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he started a conversation with me about his war years and Normandy. I sat for hours that day listening to him tell me what he went through…all of his experiences leading up to that day in Normandy.... June 6th, 1944…known as D-Day.
Our country had been at war since Pearl Harbor 1941 and when Pops was 19 years old, he joined the Army…which meant all 5 of the brothers in his family were enlisted in a branch of the military, serving our country. He married his sweetheart, Catherine on Nov 2nd 1943 and shipped out on November 3rd the following day.
He trained at Fort Pierce, Oregon, then on to New Jersey and was assigned to the famous 299th Engineering Combat Battalion, Company C. From there the orders were to Wales and cross the English Channel, setting the stage for the Invasion.

The rest is history.
Thereafter, from our numerous War conversations, my father-in-law encouraged me to take the trip…he said, “Go, Go for me. Well, the honor was mine I signed up for an experience of a lifetime. I told him I’d be in Normandy on July 4th…”I will call you after our concert, Pops. So on that day, our 165 voice choir and orchestra performed and I sang for Pops we sang for all the soldiers…and all the ones who didn’t return home.
After the concert, I walked alone…through the rows upon rows of white crosses, as far as the eye could see, till I stood overlooking those beaches of Normandy…I found a bench and I called Popa at the nursing home. He answered on the 1st ring …was he waiting for my call?…would he remember??? Oh Yes, he did remember…he said, Is that you Baby? And I said, yes Pops, it’s me…”Are you there? he said in a booming voice and I replied, Yes…I’m there,I just sang for you I’m here, overlooking the beach where you landed…which side did you come up Pops?…and he immediately said, like it happened yesterday…”the left side.. I said, Yes, yes, I’m looking at it right now and heading that way I took lots of pictures.. I’m so proud of you Pops…thank you…I love you!!
So in closing, I am humbled, honored, grateful …and Proud of all the WWII Veterans…called ”The Greatest Generation …those who served and all who continue to serve the United  States of America to keep us free…….. I salute you Papa!!

THANK YOU CAROL FOR SHARING THIS BEAUTIFUL MEMORY WITH US!
