Clarkson University offered at tour of Old Main as part of the Sandstone Festival. Folks on the tour were invited into Old Main's West Wing via the front entrance. We were delighted to see the restoration project taking place. Original oak wainscoting and floors are being restored. The biggest treat was to see the third floor opened up into one large room again for the first time in many years. It was reported to have been on of the best dance halls in the north country when it first opened in the late 1890s.

This year the festival included a tour of the Zion Episcopal Church in Colton, NY. It was built by the Clarkson Family in honor of Elizabeth Clarkson, the mother of Thomas S. Clarkson , who the University is named after. Pictured here is the interior of the Church which is in nearly original condition! The sandstone came from the Clarkson Sandstone quarries along the Raquette River between Hannawa Falls and Potsdam. Much of the interior of the church was milled in Colton.

As part of the festival this year, we toured the First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam, built of Potsdam Sandstone in 1868, in the Gothic Revival style. Organist Laura Toland gave a talk on the church's organ and treated the audience with wonderful examples of the power of the organ and it's subtle beauty. Stained glass expert David Martin of Ogdensburg gave a talk on the windows, many of them made by Horwood of Ogdensburg.

Many thanks to: the Village and Town of Potsdam, The Friends of the Museum, The Sweetgrass Foundation, Clarkson University, private donors, Trinity Episcopal Church, Sam's Tents, The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, NCPR, St. May's Roman Catholic Church, The First Presbyterian Church, Zion Episcopal Church, St. Lawrence University, the Bayside Cemetery Association, Maxfield's Restaurant, Mama Lucia's, Northern Music, The First Crush Bistro, The Tred Mill, The Potsdam Town Clerk, The North Country Children's Museum, Renew Architecture and all the folk who supported the 50/50 raffle Friday night!

My list features a place for that breitling replica watches - a wrist watch that, for me, is among the finest types of the twentieth century. It signifies all of the characteristics I search for inside a watch - a wealthy logo and model history, an legendary design, harmonious proportions, and fine finishing. Not to mention it feels and looks fantastic around the wrist.
