Gifting Items to the Museum

The Potsdam Public Museum accepts gifts from the public. The majority of the items in our collection have come from individual donors and this remains the primary source for additions to the collection.

If you have a family heirloom, piece of Potsdam memorabilia, or other item you'd like to donate to the museum then please consider these factors before contacting us:

  • Is the item in good condition? Free of mold or other issues?
  • Does the item have a story behind it that makes it unique to Potsdam?
  • How does it pertain to Potsdam history?
  • Does the item belong to you or another person?
  • Is it subject to any copyright or other licensing restriction?

If you are unsure about any of these considerations, please contact the Museum at museum@vi.potsdam.ny.us or at 315-265-6910.

Please include this information:

  1. Photographs or scans of the item(s)
  2. Describe the item(s) in as much detail as possible
  3. Please tell us why you think it/they would be a good addition to the collection

Potential donations to the museum are submitted to the Museum Board's Collections Committee for approval. If an item is not accepted by the committee, we will contact you to let you know.

Some reasons an item may not be accepted:

  • Item's condition is too deteriorated for preservation
  • There is already an example in the collection
  • It does not fit the scope of the museum's collection policy or mission
  • We cannot adequately store it at this time
