Historic Homes of Potsdam

What is a historic building?

According to the National Historic Register guidelines, a historic building is a residence at least fifty years old and with a significance to either the cultural, historical, or architectural record of a specific region or the nation.

Potsdam has a number of buildings on the National Historic Register and some of them are part of the Market St Historic District.

Found Between the Walls

When renovating an old home, it is possible to find objects inside the walls. Sometimes they get here by accident and other times them were deliberately placed.

Folklore about placing certain objects likes shoes and coins inside a house's walls was widespread during the 19th century. From dissuading witches to visit to inviting prosperity to the residents, the practices were intended to benefit the welfare of the residents.

Whether deliberate or otherwise, the objects do offer a snapshot into the time periods when a house was built and the changes over time.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Potsdam has seen many structures come and go over the years. Many of the village's notable homes were torn down over the years and replaced by other structures.

Some of the houses were demolished recently while others were replaced many decades ago. Whenever they were lost, we can still remember them and the people who lived there.
