Hartle Family Papers
Collection Overview
This collection includes student handbooks, programs, photographs, decals/bumper stickers, a letter, envelopes and other ephemeral items related to the Hartle family and the various schools located in Potsdam such as the Potsdam High School, Potsdam Normal School and Clarkson University during the 1930s through early 1940s. In addition, making up most of the collection, are 629 vintage, contemporary, and photographic postcards illustrating Potsdam and much of St. Lawrence County, NY. Many of the cards have been postmarked and contain messages of all kinds.
The postcards are arranged as they arrived at the museum in a geographic manner, beginning each group with towns close to Potsdam and heading away or outward, and include images of streets, rivers, homes, schools, churches, civic buildings, river steamships, and more. Of interest in one of the Clarkson catalog’s is a description of the "War Emergency Program" which details a reduced degree program from four years to two years and 18 months in a three-term year enabling students to complete their degree before entering military service.
Note: this collection does contain several objects given by the donor that were owned by the Hartle family but are not included in the description of this finding aid. See Acc #2022.017 in Past Perfect cataloging software for more information regarding those items.
